Room: A Novel

Room - Emma Donoghue * Spoilers *Beautiful and moving in its simple concept - that of a five year old boy who only knows the room where his mother is held - the story first captivates then chills you. The simple logic of a five year old is unassailable and the simplicity of the tragedy more stark because of the basic language. What stopped it being five stars was the aftermath of the escape - for a while, it looked the author didn't know where to go with it after that, and shot a few plot arrows in the air to see which ones would come down. However, when she eventually saw the ending, the story picked up again and sailed to its wonderful and simple ending. In short, a wonderful opening and closing, but a middle of the book droop. Well worth reading though.
